Mary
Ann Nelson is the Assistant Commissioner for Academic Excellence
at the Minnesota Department of Education. She is responsible to
oversee the state’s academic content standards, professional development,
teacher licensing, libraries and school technology, integration
programs and school choice options including charter schools, area
learning centers, on-line learning, and college credit programs
for high school students.
Mary
Ann has eighteen years of experience as a public school superintendent
and assistant superintendent in first-ring metropolitan school districts,
and she spent eleven years in high school principal and teaching
roles. Mary Ann served on the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm
Baldrige National Quality Award in 2003 and led her school district’s
initiation of the Baldrige self study in partnership with the Minnesota
Academic Excellence Foundation. During her five years on a metropolitan
hospital board of trustees, she chaired the board’s quality committee
overseeing physician credentialing and hospital quality measures.
Mary
Ann has a B.S. in English Education from the University of Minnesota,
M.S. in Educational Administration from Mankato State University
and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of
Minnesota. She lives with her husband in Minneapolis , Minnesota
